Designing for the Home Decor Market

Share Post:

During a Q&A call (Immersion 2023) Bonnie answered my question about having a hard time creating blender patterns, some people in the chat mentioned upholstery fabric and home decor. Bonnie mentioned wallpaper.

As I’ve shared a few times here on my blog, I don’t like creating blender prints and coordinates.

As you can see below, I was finally able to create some blenders and coordinates and I do like them.  But I realize I like smaller collections of between 2-4 patterns. The idea of creating a collection of 8-12 patterns is totally overwhelming to me. And here’s the thing. Since I don’t want to design for the fabric / sewing / quilt industry I don’t have to.

This really opened my eyes because until this call I just assumed EVERYONE designed in these large collections. Consequently due to my style and the fact I prefer smaller collections I think I’m better suited for designing for the home decor market as opposed to fabric design.

To get a better sense of what I had, I decided to pull together some combinations that I think look good together. Obviously I don’t want to reuse patterns between collections (or I don’t think I do). But I wanted to see how I felt about these small collections and look at them in relationship to marketing towards the home decor market.

I think some of them look great together and can see them on upholstery, curtains, wallpaper, pillows, rugs, duvet covers, sheets, etc.

So it looks like I’ve really honed in on my style and my market: I prefer maximalist designs and marketing to the home decor markets. Wahoo!
